I am a cognitive scientist working at the intersection of linguistics, AI, and philosophy.
I hold doctoral degrees in both computer science (Aalto University, 2021) and cognitive science (University of Helsinki, 2023). My first thesis investigates the use of natural language processing (NLP) in various security- or privacy-sensitive applications. My second thesis presents a novel theoretical account of translation as an aspect of bilingual cognitive competence.
My current postdoctoral work focuses on interpreting leading NLP systems using linguistic theory. In particular, there is much debate on how large language models (LLMs) process language compared to humans. I believe that evaluating this hinges on how we treat certain crucial (meta-)theoretical assumptions concerning cognitive explanation, computation, and mental representation.
